Woodstock '69 Uncovered—Publish YOUR Woodstock Story!

When Nashville-based singer-songwriter Leilah Hayman posted her Bio on our sister site, Durango-Songwriters-Expo.com, I started thinking about the legacy of Woodstock '69. You see, Leilah is the very talented daughter of sixties hit singer-songwriter Melanie, who was one of the performers at the 1969 history-making event. It has been reported that three people died at Woodstock. Babies were born. Thousands and thousands of lives, as well as the direction of music, politics, indeed even the American psyche, were changed forever. Were YOU at Woodstock or do you have an interesting Woodstock story? We invite you to publish it here. —Jack Hayford, Editor

Remember the "good ol' days"? Canned Heat performs "Goin' Up the Country" at Woodstock '69:

Woodstock 69 Aerial View "The Woodstock Music and Art Fair was a historic event held at Max Yasgur's 600 acre (2.4 km˛) dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Bethel (Sullivan County) is 43 miles southwest of the town of Woodstock, NY, which is in adjoining Ulster County.

"To many, the festival exemplified the counterculture of the 1960s and the 'hippie era.' Thirty-two of the best-known musicians of this time period appeared during the sometimes rainy weekend. Though attempts have been made over the years to recreate the festival, the original Woodstock Festival of 1969 has proven to be unique and legendary. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in music history and was listed on Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll.

"The event was captured in a successful 1970 movie, Woodstock, and Joni Mitchell's song 'Woodstock,' which memorialized the event, became a major hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

"[The] documentary film, Woodstock, directed by Michael Wadleigh and edited by Thelma Schoonmaker and Martin Scorsese, was released in 1970. It received the Academy Award for Documentary Feature. The film has been deemed culturally significant by the United States Library of Congress. In 1994, the "director's cut" was released; it included performances by Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin, who were not in the original version of the film." —Wikipedia

Woodstock 69 Tickets "The Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969 drew more than 450,000 people to a pasture in Sullivan County. For four days, the site became a countercultural mini-nation in which minds were open, drugs were all but legal and love was "free". The music began Friday afternoon at 5:07pm August 15 and continued until mid-morning Monday August 18. The festival closed the New York State Thruway and created one of the nation's worst traffic jams. It also inspired a slew of local and state laws to ensure that nothing like it would ever happen again." —Elliot Tiber

"Melanie Safka had a song on the radio called 'Beautiful People.' 'An extremely hip DJ named Roscoe on WNEW-FM played it. One day, Melanie ran into a curly-haired music-business guy named Michael Lang, who was talking about a festival he was producing. When Melanie asked if she could play there, Lang's answer was a very laid-back, 'Sure.' 'I thought it would be very low key,' recalled Melanie." —Music-Atlas.com
