What Was The Number One Song When You Were Born?

by Jack Hayford

Sing Along With Mitch What was #1 on the Billboard Charts the day you were born? Do you know? Do you care?

Frankly, I felt a little peeved when I looked to see what was #1 in September of 1955: "The Yellow Rose of Texas" by Mitch Miller! Holy s*** does that date ME! I thought it would be something cooler than that!

(I remember my mother telling someone that she had seen in a tabloid that Mitch Miller had lice in his beard...that was the story...some things never change!)

But Sing Along With Mitch I recall as a very popular show in my childhood, so he hung in there for quite a few years...and was part of the beginning of television programming, including the many popular music variety shows to follow.

"The Yellow Rose of Texas"...was first published in 1853—the author identified only as "J.K."—and was probably intended for the minstrel stage. During the Civil War it was a popular marching song of the Confederate troops, and during the postwar decades it kept spirits high on US Cavalry outposts, on the cowboy trails and at many social gatherings. In 1955, numerous hit recordings re-established it as a favorite "sing-along" piece. —Best Loved Songs of the American People

Crooner Johnny Desmond and music-comedy innovator Stan Freberg also charted with "The Yellow Rose of Texas" in 1955...a versatile song indeed!

The Yellow Rose of Texas
(Traditional)

There's a yellow rose of Texas
that I am going to see
No other fellow knows her
no fellow only me
She cried so when I left her
it like to break my heart
And if I ever find her
we never more will part

She's the sweetest rose of color
a fellow ever knew
Her eyes are bright as di'monds
they sparkle like the dew
You may talk about your dearest May
and sing of Rosa lee
But the Yellow Rose of Texas
beats the belles of Tennessee

Oh now I'm going to find her
for my heart is full of woe
And we'll sing the song together
that we sung long ago
We'll play the banjo gaily
and we'll sing the songs of yore
And the Yellow Rose of Texas
shall be mine forevermore
