The National Conference for Community and Justice - for Christians and Jews - Get Together
Jesse Colin Young got his start as a folksinger in Greenwich Village coffeehouses in the early '60s, releasing two major-label albums, The Soul of a City Boy (April 1964) and Young Blood (March 1965). He met guitarist Jerry Corbitt in Cambridge, MA, and with keyboardist/guitarist Lowell "Banana" Levinger and drummer Joe Bauer, they formed the Youngbloods , initially playing in the jug band, good-time style of the Lovin' Spoonful.
Signed to RCA, they released their debut single, Corbitt's "Grizzly Bear," a chart entry, in November 1966, followed by their self-titled debut album in February 1967. The album featured the group's version of Dino Valenti and Bob Cullen's idealistic folk anthem "Get Together," which was released as a single in July and also made the charts. Earth Music (November 1967) followed. By the time of Elephant Mountain (April 1969), they had moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and Corbitt had dropped out. RCA re-released "Get Together" as a single after it was used as in a public-service commercial for the National Council of Christians and Jews, and it became a gold Top Ten hit. —Allmusic.com

"'Get Together' was written by Chester William [Chet] Powers, Jr. (died 16 November 1994, Santa Rosa, California), an American singer/songwriter.
In the early 1960s, while a member of the Greenwich Village folk scene, he wrote 'Get Together,'" a quintessential 1960s love-and-peace anthem, later recorded by Jefferson Airplane, The Youngbloods, and many others. While in Greenwich Village, he played often with singer-songwriter Fred Neil. He was involved in the formation San Francisco psychedelic rock group Quicksilver Messenger Service (QMS), but claims that he founded the band have been disputed by other members of the group. Powers' career was blighted by frequent drug busts. He was quickly dispatched from Quicksilver's early line-up after one such bust, though he rejoined the group in later years as lead singer and rhythm guitarist...
"Chet Powers became Dino Valente by the time he arrived in Greenwich Village in 1960 from staid Connecticut. He worked his way through the basket-houses and crash pads over the next couple of years and came closer than anyone to earning a rep as the 'underground Dylan'..." —Wikipedia
Importantly, "Get Together" was featured in the blockbuster movies, Easy Rider (1969) and Forrest Gump (1994).
In 2004 Jesse Colin Young released a critically acclaimed new CD, Living in Paradise.
Get Together Lyrics
(Words and Music by Chet Powers)
Love is but the song we sing,
And fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Know the dove is on the wing
And you need not know why
C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
Some will come and some will go
We shall surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moments sunlight
Fading in the grass
C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
If you hear the song I sing,
You must understand
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command
C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
Right now
Right now!
