Songs Inspired by 9-11—Little Did She Know (She'd Kissed A Hero)
2008 Update: The legendary Patti Page (born in 1927) is releasing a new record on Curb (2008). She has included our friend Kristy Jackson's "Little Did She Know (She'd Kissed A Hero)" which has become one of the most popular and endearing "9/11" songs ever written. Very nice little moment as she sings it here.
Patti Page -- "Little Did She Know"
Editors Note: Events-in-Music.com is premised on the universality of music as a language. Music speaks to people when words and actions often simply cannot communicate effectively. Kristy Jackson's "Little Did She Know (She'd Kissed A Hero)," inspired by the unprecedented attack on America on 9/11/2001, is unquestionably one of those songs that "says it better" than any mere words or demonstrations could ever hope to do. Here is Kristy's story:
"How the song was born," from Kristy's book Little Did She Know She'd Kissed A Hero:
"...A song can start with an idea in the songwriter's head and then can be crafted into 'radio' form. Or, if you're very quiet a song can come from your heart. Those are gifts.
"September 23, I attended a church service honoring our armed services. We sang 'Battle Hymn of the Republic,' and veterans and current service people filed in and stood in the front of the church. We all cried and stood to cheer them. Many of them were crying, too...My heart was so heavy and full of praise for these brave men and women."
"That evening, I put my hands on my piano keys and a new song poured out, inspired by the heroes on Flight 93. In less than an hour, it was written. I can hardly claim to be its author...I just held the pen.
"September 26, I recorded 'Little Did She Know (She'd Kissed A Hero)'...solo, my voice and piano, one take."
Kristy gave her recording to a friend at a local radio station who started playing the song and posted it on their website.
"Within a week, 200 radio stations all over America downloaded the song and were playing it. By mid October, 'Little Did She Know' had become the #1 most requested song on the biggest radio stations in New York City."
And the requests continue still as the song lives on and on in the hearts of the millions so deeply touched by the heartbreak and heroism of 9/11.
