Song of the Cicada—Music for the Healing Arts

by DA Jack Hayford

I am trying to get some painting done around my house. I have a lot of foliage even though I really don't live in the country. And out of that foliage around my house, nearly every day here in May of 2011, the leaves and the air are alive with the song of the cicada.

The "summer night" sound of the cicada is generally a sign of spring and a pleasant auditory experience. It's nice.

But right now they are SCREAMING and there are BILLIONS of them. Sounds like a Hitchcock soundtrack. They are LOUD.

I found out why the cicada sound is so big this year from NPR.org:

April 30, 2011

They've been developing underground for 13 years, and now billions of Brood 19 cicadas are set to emerge with a bang, or a buzz in states including Georgia, South Carolina and Oklahoma [and Tennessee!].

"Most of the time, cicadas sound like summer evenings, but some of you may already be hearing what's known as Brood 19 periodical cicadas. They've spent the past 13 years developing underground and have been spotted - or heard - in states including Georgia, South Carolina, and Oklahoma. By mid-May, they're expected to emerge big time...That familiar buzz is the male's courtship song. After mating, the female lays her eggs in tree branches. About two months later, they hatch, the nymphs fall to the ground, burrow in, and 13 years later we meet the next generation...."

Having found out why the song of the cicada is so loud this year I then wondered if the song(s) were on record...or in the cloud.

In looking, I found an interesting artist (Deuter), a previously unknown and cool record company (New Earth Records), and in the process re-discovered that music is THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE and that people do create music for the healing arts the world over. Thanks Cicada!

From AllMusic.com:

Deuter mixes acoustic and electronic instruments, ethnic influences, and sounds from nature...he's been doing it since the early '70s...Deuter's spiritual search has taken him around the world, most notably to India, where he lived on an ashram, studied Indian music, and recorded several albums.

From NewEarthRecords.com:

New Earth Records, is a record label that, for more than two decades, has been bringing visionary music to enhance well-being to audiences in over 60 countries worldwide. Committed to spiritual enrichment, a healthy lifestyle, and an eco-conscious future, New Earth Records features a number of albums designed specifically to accompany relaxation, meditation, yoga, and the healing arts. New Earth Records is pleased to offer a wide array of chill-out, trance, electronic and world music to accompany our listeners in the dance through life.

After our dedication to the creation of unique music to support a holistic way of life, our number one priority is to our customers and the service we offer them. We are constantly integrating innovative techniques to help us better serve our customers and are dedicated to being both fast and reliable, and running our business with integrity!

Before meditation went mainstream, one of our first slogans was Music for People on the Path. Our vision during the years has always been to provide high-quality music that leads people into meditation and silence, to celebrate life as a divine gift, and to enjoy and carry healing vibrations to people and this planet.

In India, the existing philosophy is that the whole universe is composed of the sound 'OM.' It is our sincere understanding that through certain vibrations, sound energy healing can occur. With this in mind we are always looking for cutting edge, high-quality productions and artists who share this vision.
