Mountain Stage NewSong Contest and FestivalMOUNTAIN STAGE is a two-hour radio show recorded before a live audience in Charleston, WV. Now in its 20th year, the show has established a long tradition of featuring national and international acts in almost every style of music. Mountain Stage produces an average of 26 new shows a year. Most shows feature five acts and are taped at the Cultural Center Theater at the Capitol Complex in Charleston. A production of West Virginia Public Broadcasting, Mountain Stage is a series of two-hour specials that presents acts ranging from traditional roots and country music to avant garde rock and jazz. Mountain Stage producers respect the musicians who keep traditions alive as well as the innovators who forge ahead. The purpose of the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest is to offer recognition and support to the best unsigned performing songwriters we can find, as well as to bring together people who love to perform their own songs in a gathering of musical camaraderie. Unlike most song contests, the NewSong Contest values artists’ unique presentation as much as the universal qualities of their tunes. The contest is part of NewSong’s greater mission to build a supportive community of performers at all levels of skill, to encourage up-and-coming players and to showcase the finest work by singer-songwriters for listeners who love this kind of music. Twelve entrants will advance to the final round, where each invited finalist will perform two songs of his or her choosing before a live audience and a panel of judges. Of these, five co-winners will be selected, and one of these will be hand-picked by Mountain Stage host Larry Groce to perform live on Mountain Stage, which will broadcast on radio across the globe.
