Growing up in Elmira, [John Hall] began 11 years of classical piano training at age 5. He mastered the French horn and taught himself to play the guitar. He was a National Science Foundation Scholar who skipped two grades of high school and entered Notre Dame University at age 16.
Hall, 61 [in 2010], began his professional music career in the mid-1960s and was composing and directing music for Broadway and off-Broadway musicals by the end of the decade. He was also a studio guitarist and songwriter, working with singers such as Janis Joplin and Linda Ronstadt.
In 1972, Hall co-founded the pop-rock group Orleans and co-wrote the band's two evergreen hits — "Still the One" and "Dance with Me."
Always a political and social activist, Hall, a Democrat, served on the Ulster County [NY] Legislature and the Saugerties School Board in the 1990s.
In 2006, with the support of NYSUT and its political action network, he won the House seat in the predominantly Republican 19th District, and with it the distinction of becoming the first rock 'n' roll musician in Congress. NYSUT.org
STILL THE ONE Lyrics (Words and Music by Johanna Hall and John Hall)
We've been together since way back Sometimes I never want to see you again But I want you to know, after all these years You're still the one I want whisperin' in my ear
You're still the one I want to talk to in bed Still the one that turns my head We're still having fun, and you're still the one
I looked at your face every day But I never saw it 'til I went away When winter came, I just wanted to go Deep in the desert, I longed for the snow
You're still the one that makes me laugh Still the one that's my better half We're still having fun, and you're still the one
You're still the one that makes me strong Still the one I want to take along We're still having fun, and you're still the one
Changing, our love is going gold Even though we grow old, it grows new
You're still the one that I love to touch Still the one and I can't get enough We're still having fun, and you're still the one
You're still the one who can scratch my itch Still the one and I wouldn't switch We're still having fun, and you're still the one
You are still the one that makes me shout Still the one that I dream about We're still having fun, and you're still the one....
"Still the One" was used as a network promo by ABC in the 1977-79 seasons. Ironically, or perhaps appropriately, ABC at the time dominated the Nielsen ratings. The song reached #5 on the Billboard Top 40 chart in 1976.
