Electric Light Orchestra, better known as ELO, the highly orchestrated English rock band headed by singer/songwriter/producer Jeff Lynne, charted nearly two-dozen times in the decade between 1975 and 1985.
Apart from ELO, Lynne has made a significant mark as a record producer and as a (relatively unknown) founding member of supergroup The Traveling Wilburys (along with Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, and Tom Petty).
[ELO's] platinum-selling double-LP, Out of the Blue, appeared in 1977, although the record's success was tempered somewhat by a lawsuit filed by Electric Light Orchestra against their former distributor, United Artists, whom the band charged flooded the market with defective copies of the album. Columbia distributed the remainder of the group's output, issued through their own Jet Records imprint, beginning with 1979's Discovery, which notched the Top Ten entries "Shine a Little Love" and "Don't Bring Me Down." In the wake of ELO's best-selling Greatest Hits compilation, Lynne wrote several songs for the soundtrack of the Olivia Newton-John film Xanadu, including the hit title track. The next proper Electric Light Orchestra album, 1981's Time, generated their final Top Ten hit, "Hold on Tight." Following 1983's Secret Messages, [drummer Bev] Bevan left the group to join Black Sabbath, although he returned to the fold for 1986's Balance of Power, which despite the presence of the Top 20 hit "Calling America" received little interest from fans and media alike. —Yahoo Music
Hold On Tight Lyrics (Words and Music by Jeff Lynne)
Hold on tight to your dream Hold on tight to your dream When you see your ship go sailing When you feel your heart is breaking Hold tight to your dream.
Its a long time to be gone Time just rolls on and on When you need a shoulder to cry on When you get so sick of trying Just hold tight to your dream
Chorus: When you get so down that you can't get up And you want so much but you're all out of luck When you're so downhearted and misunderstood Just over & over & over you could
Accroches-toi a ton reve Accroches-toi a ton reve Quand tu vois ton bateau partir Quand tu sents -- ton coeur se briser Accroches-toi a ton reve.
Repeat chorus:
Hold on tight to your dream Hold on tight to your dream When you see the shadows falling When you hear that cold wind calling Hold on tight to your dream.
Oh, yeah Hold on tight to your dream Yeah, hold on tight... To your dream.
