In the Garden—In Memorium

Bernadette Trahan

In Memory of Bernadette Marie Trahan
(June 30, 1960-April 5, 2006)
by Jack Hayford, Program Director DurangoSong.com

On April 5th, 2006 my family lost a wonderful young person, Bernadette "Bern" Trahan, from complications related to her life-long battle with renal disease. She was diagnosed at the age of 12 and received her first kidney transplant in 1986. Although this kidney failed, Bern became the first woman in Boston medical history to successfully carry a child while on dialysis. Her son Matthew was born at high risk but has thankfully grown into a healthy young man.

Bernadette was an artist, a painter and an expert, award-winning, beader. She was my first cousin.

Painting by Bernadette Trahan When I was married in 1978, right around the time the picture above was taken (her High School Yearbook picture), my wife and I were so moved by Bern's artwork that we used her pen and ink drawing (left) for our wedding announcement. She had a very special gift and her family is comforted and inspired by the lasting beauty of her many creations.

At Bernadette's memorial service, we sang the beautiful hymn, In The Garden.

Below are the words. May they be a comfort to you and yours as well.

In The Garden* Lyrics
(Words and Music by C. Austin Miles)

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses.

Refrain

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice,
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.

Refrain

I’d stay in the garden with Him
Though the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling.

Refrain

*This hymn was sung in the 1984 movie Places In The Heart, which won two Academy Awards.

You can hear this hymn played at CyberHymnal.org.
