Dreamgirls Pays Tribute to The Supremes
Dreamgirls, the 2006 movie musical, was adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the smae name by acclaimed writer/director Bill Condon, whose winning touch for musicals was demonstrated by the 2002 hit Chicago.
Dreamgirls, the play as well as the movie, is based loosely on the stellar career of Motown's (Detroit, MI) Supremes who charted no less than twelve American number-one hits between 1964 and 1969.
With Dreamgirls the movie-musical, director Condon has added some of the socio-political elements which dominated the news in the 1960s, such as the Civil Rights March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
The new movie stars Jamie Foxx (comedian and 2005 Academy Award winner for his performance as Ray Charles in Ray), pop star Beyoncé Knowles, comedian/actor Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover, and Jennifer Hudson, a finalist in the third season of American Idol, in her film debut.
