Don't Stop Believin' Steve Perry is the Voice of Journey
While American rock band Journey's "Don't Stop Believin" (sung by Steve Perry) never got higher than #9 on the U.S. Billboard charts, it has sold more than 4.5 million digital copies. This makes it the most downloaded song released in the 20th century, as of July 2011.The song and the band came back into vogue after the HBO program "The Sopranos" closed the long-running series with the anthemic tune. It has since been used in "Glee," "Family Guy," the Broadway musical "Rock of Ages" and at countless sporting events. "Don't Stop Believin'" was ubiquitous on radio airwaves in 1981, and throughout the eighties, and continues to be a staple on Classic Rock and Adult Contemporary radio playlists.
While Journey has taken to the road again (with a sound-alike for Perry) on the strength of nostalgia for their big sound and big hits, it was the big, easily recognizable voice of Steve Perry that made Journey a household name and sold millions of albums for the band. Perry's voice is as distinct as Bryan Adams' or even Rod Stewart's. One need only think of "Oh Sherrie" (which made it to #3 on Billboard's Top 40 and #1 Mainstream Rock), or "Foolish Heart," both released by Perry as a solo artist in 1984, to bring his iconic voice to mindthe voice that made those Journey hits...the only voice that matters in the story of Journey.
