Confused? OK, let's try to make some sense out of this piece. If you don't know who Andy Andrews is, we'll tell you in a second. First off, you do remember all or most of the words to "Gilligan's Island," don't you?

Gilligan's Island Theme Song Lyrics
(Words and Music by George Wyle and Sherwood Schwartz)

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip,
That started from this tropic port,
Aboard this tiny ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day,
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew,
The Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle,
With Gilligan,
The Skipper too,
The millionaire and his wife,
The movie star,
And The Rest,
Here on Gilligan's Isle.

The lyrics to the show-closing version are slightly different:

So this is the tale of the castways,
They're here for a long, long time,
They'll have to make the best of things,
It's an uphill climb.

The first mate and the Skipper too,
Will do their very best,
To make the others comfortable,
In the tropic island nest.

No phone, no lights no motor cars,
Not a single luxury,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
As primative as can be.

So join us here each week my freinds,
You're sure to get a smile,
From seven stranded castways,
Here on Gilligan's Isle.

To top it all off, the first page (with accompanying midi) of each score is available to see and hear without buying the full score. Of course you should buy the digital sheet music to actually learn the pieces thoroughly--which are in the $5 each range--but it's wonderful to be able to "sample" the song before buying, to see if it's for you. According to Wikipedia:

"Gilligan's Island was an American TV sitcom which aired for three seasons on the CBS network from September 26 1964 to September 4 1967. It was a comedy that was loved and watched by many people. It ran for a total of 98 episodes. The first 36 episodes were filmed and shown in black-and-white (they were later colorized in syndication); the remaining 62 episodes and the three sequels were filmed in color.

"The show's theme song, "The Ballad of Gilligan's Isle" (written by George Wyle and Sherwood Schwartz), is probably the best-known example of ballad meter, and it begins:

"Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip... The song was written to give new viewers a capsule summary of the unusual situation the castaways find themselves in. Another verse was played over the closing credits, after the invariably unsuccessful attempts of the castaways to leave the island."

Says Allmusic.com's Steve Huey:

"Arranger, conductor, choreographer, and composer George Wyle largely made his fortune in the world of television, working mostly on variety shows; however, he is most renowned for contributing one of the medium's catchiest tunes with his oft-referenced opening theme for Gilligan's Island. Wyle was born March 22, 1916, in New York City, and worked on variety shows starring Jerry Lewis, Flip Wilson, and Jimmy Durante. His most prominent association was with Andy Williams; Wyle not only served as music director for The Andy Williams Show, but also (along with Eddie Pola) composed Williams' ebullient Christmas standard 'It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.'

"'The Ballad of Gilligan's Island,' though, was Wyle's ticket to television immortality. The show's producer, Sherwood Schwartz, had written some of the lyrics, but needed help revising them and setting them to an appropriate tune. Wyle composed a sea chantie to tell the story (Schwartz's original idea was for an island calypso), did some lyrical fine-tuning, and the result was pure television magic. Even if Wyle isn't a household name, his signature creation still continues to be memorized word for word by new generations of sitcom fans. Wyle died of luekemia on May 1, 2003 at the age of 87."

OK, so who is Andy Andrews and why was he singing Gilligan's Island at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville...and why should we care anyway?

Andy Andrews is a bestselling author, masterful storyteller, and inspirational speaker. His powerful DVD, The Seven Decisions, which aired on Npt (Nashville Public Television), was recorded live at the Ryman.

In his book, The Traveler's Gift, Andy reveals The Seven Decisions that serve as the basis of his live presentation...and that will transform your life into a brilliant adventure!

Using wit, wisdom, and remarkable true stories to illuminate The Seven Decisions, Andy proves that everything you do matters, not just for you and your family today but for generations to come. In this riveting, thought-provoking—and often very funny—performance, you will learn how one man’s resolute courage shaped the history of the world. How the life of one baby saved over 2 billion people and counting. How when you "persist without exception," miracles occur. Why you never have to live any part of your life in fear...and so much more!

It's really good stuff if you're looking to make a life-change!

OK, let's get to the "Gilligan" part. In Andy's presentation he talks about the importance of spending your time with the right people -- people whose character and traits you admire -- and about avoiding spending time with people that pull you away from what you know you should be doing, or who help support bad habits in yourself.

He also points out how everything we spend time with gets absorbed into our conscious and sub-conscious mind. Thus, says Andy, LISTEN to recordings of inspiring and motivational speakers, even DVDs. Just put them on and let them play...while you clean your house, work on your computer, or even sleep! The messages that you are bombarded with SINK IN.

Andy is prone to demonstration. Thus, he gets the entire live audience to sing all the words to the "Theme from the Television Show Gilligan's Island" to prove his point. Almost EVERYONE knows all the words to a TV show that ran just three seasons (but forever in syndication), FORTY YEARS AGO. Many in attendance were not yet born when the show premiered.

It's a valid and well-traveled "truth." "Garbage in - garbage out." "We are what we eat." "As a man thinketh..." "Think and Grow Rich." On and on throughout the self-mastery discipline.

But Andy Andrews has a great modern, yet down-to-earth approach to delivering his message. We'd say he's kind of a Jeff Foxworthy meets Jim Rohn. Get this DVD and let it play (or watch it intently if you can -- you'll want to!!). You'll probably wake up the next morning with a clearer vision of how to fix some problems in your life.
